Question about deep space photographs?

These are diffraction spikes caused by the struts which support the secondary mirror, mainly in Newtonians and classic Cassegrains. However, they are so popular aesthetically that some astrophotographers actually add them with a special filter! They are particularly useful in distinguishing between faint stars and distant galaxies, as the stars have spikes but the galaxies do not.
