Our cat is shedding excessively, any advice?

Our cat seems to be shedding her fur excessively, every time we stroke her we end up with fur everywhere. she has a good diet, although she doesn't allow us to brush her regularly, should we brush her more often? we also think excessive fur lose could be due to her age, she's no spring kitten, is this right? any advice?
