My chinchillas fur is thinning on each side of his body. why?

Its only on each side of his butt area, and they arent bald spots his fur is just thinner and shorter. the spots are pretty big and are on each side of his body. he eats and has dust baths regularly. He i about 8 years old could his age have anything to do with it?
